Super Play Issue 21

July 1994
Release Date: 2 Jun 1994
Pages: 100

Introduction

On the cover of Issue of 21 was a little known SNES game Vortex, which led their special coverage of games featuring the Super FX chip - which gave developers the opportunity to launch pseudo 3D games like Star Wing. As well as Vortex, they looked at Wild Trax, and Star Wing 2 - although little would they know that it took a further 23 years to be released officially!

The big news this month was that Nintendo were developing a 32-Bit console, to be released in 1995 to compete with Sega and Sony’s next-gen consoles.  Although this would be delayed by a year and eventually turn into the N64 - the basic details were there, such as the partnership with Silicon Graphics.  There was also news of prize cysts for SNES games, with Star Wing dropping to an all time low of £19.99.  Final Fantasy VI also got some news of a Western release, although this was to be called III, which skipped out on FFV. It would take many years for that to get a proper English translation.

There were plenty of mini previews too, including platformers Eek! The Cat and Crazy Chase, Tiny Toons Adventure Sports, and more Soccer games in the form of Empire Soccer and J-League Excite Stage ‘94. Fantasy Quest looked at classic strategy game Civilisation, as well as more Japanese RPGs that never saw the light of day over here like Surei Yazu and Feda: The Emblem of Justice.

Super Bomberman 2 was the lead review this month, James scored it at 91%, with praise all-round as it improved on the original in many ways. US Gold’s World Cup USA ‘94 also scored highly at 92%, with Tony Mott calling it the best overhead soccer game - replacing Sensible Soccer. 3D shooter Spectre also scored 90%, Trenton Webb praising the game as a whole if you could look past the ugly graphics. There were plenty of games bubbling under the 90% mark, including Brue Lee fighter Dragon (88%), Puzzle platformer SOS (83%) and pure platformers Jungle Book (82%) and Joe and Mac 2 (81%).

The players guide this month looked at Clay Fighter, with tips for how to play as each of the main characters - including all the special moves. There were the usual Gamefreak and Mode 7 tips sections, including plenty of tips for new games. With so many new games having been reviewed, the classic collection was extremely short - this month covering some of the cutest characters.
