Introduction
Samus Aran took pride of place on the cover of issue 20 as Super Metroid got a Japanese release. Tony, Zy and James all offered their opinion on the game, which seemed to subvert all expectations. They gave it an excellent score of 92%, with Tony calling it the best game he'd played all year. They also briefly looked at the history of Metroid and how it differed from the macho man stereotype of the mid 80s by having a girl as the starring character.
With the World Cup of 1994 just around the corner, there was another round up of all the football games on the SNES, with reviews of World Cup Striker (91%), Kick off 3 (also 91%) and FIFA International Soccer (89%). They covered each of the 13 other games in brief, and came to the conclusion that there were four games worth buying - depending on your preference. The aforementioned world cup striker, Kick off and FIFA, as well as previously reviewed Sensible Soccer.
The big news this month was that developer Williams had committed to developing games for Nintendo's Project Reality. They specialised in arcade games, so it was a real possibility that games like Killer Instinct could be published on Nintendo consoles in the future - which would be a change from Nintendo's family orientated history. As usual there were plenty of new games showcased, including the latest Street Fighter, Final Fantasy VI, Sparkster and Pac Attack. Their Japanese column “Live from Hell City” looked at a Japanese Super Famicom CD magazine - which actually covered soundtracks to games, rather than games themselves.
A feature this month looked at cheap games, with some of the great games now under £30, and some even under £15. As part of this there was also the news that Nintendo had announced a Game Boy adaptor (the Super Game Boy) and a look at an unofficial NES adaptor to play some great classic games.
Mega Man X got the full guide treatment this month as Allen Brett walked us through all the stages of the game. There was the usual Gamefreak column from Jason, who answered reader questions on both SNES tech and games, whilst Allen’s Mode 7 covered short-form tips for games like Mortal Kombat, NBA-Jam and Street Fighter II Turbo. In the What Cart section, they looked at some of the best sports games that weren’t anything to do with football.
