Introduction

Issue 14’s cover star was Sky Blazer, with his platformer game getting a UK release. Jonathan Davies scored it a fairly average 78%, with praise for the gameplay, and graphics, but struggled with its lifespan. Elsewhere Clayfighter scored 85%, with James giving heavy praise to the Sound and the Graphics. Boxing Legends of the Ring scored 87% and the US release of Plok was reviewed, with Jonathan scoring the oddball game 90%, and calling it one of the few platformers he would consider buying. In a page of “New to the UK” they quickly looked at 5 games they had reviewed on import in previous issues. Solstice II: Equinox scored 90%, a relatively unknown isometric arcade platformer.

In the news this month there were previews of plenty of new SNES games, like Megaman X, Legend of the Mystical Ninja 2 and Actraiser 2. There was also the news of HMV launching one of the biggest video games departments in the country, a stark contrast to the state of things in the modern time. There was also coverage of video game adverts, from Japan, as reported by Rik Haynes in his usual column. Rik also looked at several RPGs, including Dragon Quest 1&2 from Enix.

Features this month looked at where video game profits actually went, with Nintendo keeping more than their share or so it seemed. The next part of the Mario Collection guide looked at the first half of Mario Bros 3, and they covered Street Fighter II combos. There was also the launch of a new feature in the tips section - the Nintendo Hotline, where two experts from the hotline looked at news, tips and challenges for the latest games, as well as showcasing the most frequently asked questions of the month. The classics section was missing from What Cart? this month, which was likely down to the number of SNES releases managing to fill a full 6 pages.
