Introduction

The ghostbusters logo adorned the front of the first issue of 2008, with the team getting the first chance to play the new game on Wii, and although it was a much more cartoony version compared to other consoles, it did look like it was going to be a blast to play. There was also more information about Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros brawl, which were both mere months away. As is standard for new years issues, they also covered a Christmas buyers guide for everything you could want on Wii and DS.

After last month’s excellent reviews, this month was much tamer, the only 90% game being Zack and Wiki, which was a pseudo point and click adventure. Matthew gave it praise across the board, with it becoming one of the most unique games on the Wii thus far. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles was also reviewed this issue, as one of the new light gun games on Wii, it scored 79%, with guest reviewer Mike Gapper commenting that most of the game reused assets from other games, and lacked some creativity compared to the core games in the series. Other Wii games of note were Battalion Wars 2, - the Japanese Version scoring 79%, Tomb Raider anniversary, scoring 82%, The Simpsons Game scored a measly 55%, and Pokemon Battle Revolution scored 59%.  Mario Party’s first portable game on DS scored 71%, with Martin commending the single cart download play, but criticising the fact it was essentially the same game as the console games.

The Magazine celebrated the Wii’s first birthday in this issue, with Kim harkening back to the N64 days and baking a birthday cake. Each member of the team gave their own top 3 lists, such as Andy’s top Reggie quotes and Mark’s top 3 Nintendo surprises. There were also the top 20 wii moments of the year (and a top 5 worst moments). There was also the 2007 NGamer Awards, awarding Mario Galaxy the Wii game of the year and Phantom hourglass as the DS game of the year.

Other features this month looked at Mario Galaxy one month on, and the team’s favourite bits of the game. There was also the opportunity to win a virtual console game of your choice by entering several time and score challenges. There was also a look at the King of Kong film, and why you must see it. Page 89 looked at using the train, guitar and zapper peripherals for the Wii, and trying the controllers on Virtual Console and Mario Galaxy to see which produced the best results. Intelligent Systems was featured in the Download section, as well as looking at Oyster Harbour in their third classic level.
