Introduction

Issue 13 brought with it EA’s obscure Wii game Boogie which was a singing game featuring odd monster type characters. Although it was definitely aimed at a younger audience the team thought it had legs for a general audience, and with its release only being a month away, we didn't have long to find out. They also had a further look at Metroid Prime 3 and Smash Bros Brawl, with them both not being too far away either.

In the news, Manhunt 2 was officially banned, with the developers looking for ways to rejig the game and tone down the violence so it was more suitable for public release. There was also the announcement of Wii Ware, to provide new downloadable games for the Wii, which was an important evolution in Nintendo’s game plan.

The big game reviewed this month was the Japanese version Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on DS, which scored 95%. Matthew said it was one of the best games on DS so far, and that the graphical style from Wind Waker fit the DS perfectly. Scarface also scored 82% with special credit going to the voice acting. Mark also gave Pokemon Diamond and Pearl 81%, which although a clear evolution to the Pokemon franchise wasn’t anything brand new and didn’t really push the DS very hard at all.

The feature this month looked at how cheaters have changed over time in video games, covering subjects such as Action Replay cards and how player guides have become more prominent. They also looked at how online games have changed the rulebook. There was even a DIY guide for preventing cheating on split-screen games - involving tape and large pieces of cardboard.

In World of Nintendo they documented another trip to Japan, looking at the various arcade machines as well as Pokemon merchandise that was on offer. There was also a feature on twelve of the best minigames from some of the recent Nintendo games. There was also a look at some of the various video game ways of injecting some rhythm into your life.

Within the download section, the history lesson looked at SNK, the publishers of the Neo Geo console. They looked at some of the many classic SNK titles that could be brought to the Virtual Console. There was also a look at some of the more obscure (but still brilliant) Game Boy titles like GTA and Wario Blast. The virtual console hit 100 games this month, and they looked at some of the Japanese VC titles that could be on their way to European shores eventually.
