Introduction
Issue 54 was something of a Game Boy special, as the Japanese launch of the Game Boy Advance finally hit, and they looked at some of the games out for launch, including looking at the first level of Mario Advance as well as some of the accessories on offer, including the fabled GameCube link cables.
Also this month were some fantastic Game Boy reviews in the form of Pokemon Gold and Silver and the Japanese version of the Zelda: Oracles games - with them both of course getting five stars - Pokemon in particular getting a detailed review showing the major differences and upgrades from Red & Blue, as well as how some of the main mechanics worked. Toy Story Racer and The Dukes of Hazard also gained four stars, meaning it was still a great month for the old GBC.
Unfortunately with all the Game Boy coverage, the N64 was a bit left out this month. There was further coverage of long time previewed games Aidyn Chronicles and Indiana Jones, but nothing new as E3 was now only two months away.
The only UK review was for Banjo Tooie, the third of Rare’s trio of early 2001 games. It scored a slightly disappointing 81%, with the improvements on the first game noticeable, but Mark thought it retreaded old steps - and what was new could be incredibly frustrating and time consuming. Custom Robo V2 was the biggest import game, scoring 84%, with Super Bowling the next best at 72%.
The first part of Conker's BFD was tipped this issue, as well as general tips for Star Wars: Battle for Naboo. With the extended Game Boy coverage there wasn’t room for Skill Club or a back of the mag feature this issue.
