N64 Magazine Issue 37

Introduction

The first issue of the new millennium was encased in a bright yellow bag, dedicated to the first part of the Donkey Kong guide within, it also contained a plastic case for DK64, which would also hold the required expansion pack and a memory card. The actual issue’s cover looked at ISS millennium as the team got their hands on the game for the first time.

As part of their now regular Christmas Buyers guide, they looked at some of the best game deals on the high-street, and briefly showcased the best games from each genre that had been recently released. They also showed the games they expected to see throughout the new year, although several of these turned into pipedreams, such as Eternal Darkness (eventually released on the Gamecube in 2002) and Riqa (not released at all).

The reviews section suffered from a post-Christmas slump this issue, although the US version of Pokemon Snap was released, scoring 80%, and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing also scored a reasonable 81%. It was a similar story in Planet Game Boy, although Grand Theft Auto did score four stars.

The aforementioned DK64 guide was the top guide this month, whilst they also tipped Smash Bros and WWF Wrestlemania 2000. At the back of the mag they looked at parts of games that took inspiration from films, such as the Independence day scene within Lylat Wars, and Terminator 2’s time travel inspiration for Ocarina of Time. The biggest game featured was of course Goldeneye (being based on the film and all that), although they looked at how accurately the scenes from the film were depicted in the final game
