Introduction
Rare's latest spectacular - Jet Force Gemini got the cover treatment for issue 34, with a full going over of the shooter, including many of the weapons, and many of the different world environments. Martin gave it 93%, with heavy praise for the visuals, sound and clever use of the n64s power, without the need for the expansion pak. The only down point was that it may be too difficult for beginners. The first Mario sports game - Mario Golf scored 90%. F-Cup Maniax (aka Fighters Destiny 2) also got a Star game award for the Japanese version, scoring 85%. Ogre battle 64 also was reviewed from Japan, with Mark Scoring at 82%.
The November issue also had coverage from Nintendo's space world event, showcasing a whole host of new games for both the N64 and Game Boy, along with the specification announced for the new Game Boy Advance. The biggest game on offer was Zelda Gaiden (eventually Majora’s Mask), with Wil getting the chance to play it for the first time, including getting the experience of playing with the different masks. Other games of note were Kirby 64, Mario Adventure (later paper Mario), and the first look in a long time at Mother 3. The team also got another look at the 64DD and some of the games that were slated to appear on the ill-fated add-on.
In Planet Game Boy this month, they looked at the second generation of Pokemon games - Gold and Silver - despite the fact that the first games hadn’t even hit the UK yet. There was also further information about the three new Zelda games that were developed with Capcom’s help (later the oracle games). Disney movie Tarzan tie-in was the biggest review, scoring 4 out of 5 and they also announced the results of the Game Boy skin competition they launched in issue 31.
The big guide this month looked at World Driver Championship - with a full guide to how to get the best out of the game, as well as some cheats if you just wanted to bypass the hard bits! There was also a guide for Michael Owen’s World League Soccer 2000 - with tips on how best to play against hard computers. There was the usual help column from Dr Kitts and the Nintendo Hotline focussed on all the secrets from Quake II. Skill Club 64 was starting to get some more entrants into the platinum league this month, and I’m the Best was looking for scores from Quake II and World Driver Championship.
The back of the mag looked into whether some of the killers from Shadowman were actually real - consulting a criminal expert who surmised that the game was very well researched to get its facts fairly correct - which further helped the atmosphere of the game.
